From Charleston: Take I-64 West To Milton Exit and turn left toward Milton. At Rt. 60, turn right (west toward Barboursville.) Travel Rt. 60 about 5 miles. Take the last right, Grant Gardens Road, before Cabell-Midland High School. Signs at the intersection read: "Hope Christian Center" and "Salt Rock PSD " (If you pass Cabell-Midland High School, you’ve gone too far.) At the Pressley Ridge Schools sign, take a hard right onto a paved road. Travel 1/4 mile to the shelter. From Huntington: Take I-64 East to the Barboursville Exit. At Rt. 60, turn left toward Ona/Milton and travel approximately 4 miles. Take the first left past Cabell-Midland High School (Grant Gardens Road.) At the Pressley Ridge Schools sign, take a hard right onto a paved road. Travel 1/4 mile to the shelter.
The Hovah Hall Underwood Children’s Home is an emergency youth shelter of Children’s Home Society of WV. It was originally established in 1984 as a 10 bed shelter in Huntington, West Virginia. Since then, it has moved to multiple locations, before finding its place in Ona, West Virginia. In 2006, the new 15 bed facility was official opened. The shelter was named for Governor Underwood’s wife who was a social worker and a staunch advocate for the protection of children. As First Lady, she was actively involved in protecting the children of West Virginia. The Underwood family was instrumental in the capital campaign that raised the funds for the shelter. Currently, the shelter serves 10-19 year old male and females, who are in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Resources.
The local advisory council works diligently, with the staff of Hovah Hall Underwood Children’s Home, to meet the needs of the children served in the home. These services vary from clothing collections and facility donations, to planning and executing recreational activities for the children. They incorporate support from local businesses and organizations to promote the well-being of children and families in the community. Their efforts allow for the children to have the most protective and nurturing experience during their stay at our home.
Sunday September 13, 2015, a special dedication ceremony was held at the Hovah Hall Underwood Children’s Home to recognize former Shelter Supervisor, Joan Sansom, and her passion for children. A beautiful tree was planted and a dedication stone placed in her honor. The road leading to the home was named, “Joan Sansom’s Way.”
In, addition to the touching dedication ceremony, the ribbon cutting for the fire escape was also celebrated. The top floor of the gym can now be used for education and recreational activities for the children at the Hovah Hall Underwood Home. Thanks to Board Member, Mike Insco, who raised funds for over a year to make this possible.
The advisory council is currently working on the 1st annual Gingerbread Project. The Gingerbread Project is a three month project to raise funds for the Hovah Hall Underwood Children’s Home. This is a project that has many ways for businesses and individuals to get involved. Gingerbread Workshops taught by local caterers, chefs and bakers and will be available during the month of October and November.
Businesses can join the Gingerbread Trail and donate proceeds from the sale of products and/or services to the cause. The Trail will be open from December 1-30.
Pullman Plaza Hotel has joined us and will display all gingerbread buildings and wreath entries in their lobby for all to enjoy from November 6 through December 4. There will be a Reception in the lobby on November 5 to announce winners of the buildings and wreaths. The cost of the Reception is $30.00*. Appetizers, gingerbread desserts, beer and wine will be served.
On December 5, we will all celebrate at the Gingerbread Ball at the Ramada Inn with a Candy Land theme. Gingerbread entries will be auctioned off in a live auction while the wreaths will be available in the silent auction. All the handmade Candy Land decorations will also be for sale during the event. Susan Hicks will be our caterer for the evening that will include gingerbread desserts. We are still in process of selecting the music for the evening. Tickets are $100* and are limited for this event. *A combine package of two tickets to the Reception and the Ball for $230.
December 12 we hope you will start your day with us for Breakfast with Santa at Applebee’s. Details are still be worked out for this event. Later that day, we hope to have a sponsor so that we may be part of the Christmas Parade.
