The primary goal of Child and Family Services is to enhance, strengthen and improve the functioning of the family while striving to ensure the well-being of children. Our efforts are directed at preserving the integrity of the family and to prevent unnecessary out-of-home placements. The interventions provided by Child and Family Services are flexible and created to meet the needs of the individual client and/or family.  Programs provided are time-limited and consist of:

In-Home Treatment Services providing clinical evaluation, treatment planning, supportive individual counseling, individual/family therapy, crisis intervention and targeted case management services to children and youth under 18 years of age. These same services are with the exception of targeted case management are available to adults.

Family Options Initiative (FOI) providing parenting instruction, budgeting, life skills, instruction and case management services to West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources clients.

Fee for Service (FFS) providing services such as transportation, parenting education, life skills/support, peer support, case supervision, individual/family counseling and assessment to families.

Visitation. The Family Visitation and Reunification Program in Nicholas, McDowell, Wyoming, Braxton, Webster and Mercer Counties provided supervised visitation, case management and monthly visitation reports for children and families referred by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. Visits are individually tailored to meet the needs of the children as well as the parents or grandparents involved.  

A Family’s Story:

Eileen’s family was referred to the Society’s Family Preservation Program because CPS was considering removing her grandsons from the home. Eileen’s daughter is a drug addict and has shown hostility at home, threatening the children. Family Preservation services helped Eileen improve her parenting skills through the STEP Parenting Program, obtain psychiatric evaluations for her grandsons and begin the legal process to gain full custody of the boys. Eileen writes: "When they first came into our house, we were a wreck from the way my daughter treated us (drug abuse, verbal abuse, etc.). CHS Family Preservation has helped me to learn to cope better with life’s stressors and re-establish a working relationship with my Grandsons.

I have learned so much. Like ways to correct and understand what is going on instead of over compensating for things that happen, as I always did before in the past. [The staff] have helped me develop self-control and have showed my why the boys act the way they do sometimes and have taught me effective ways of dealing with their behaviors.

This program is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. [They care] about what happens to the family unit and they are the best help I could ever have asked for."
